The Great Horror Movies: An Historical Perspective
- Page 2
Our maverick English Teacher, Theatre Director, and movie buff looks back at the horror movie and comes up with a personal list of 101 essential films that constitute a core canon for understanding and appreciating the genre. He has tried to balance quality, historical importance, popularity, and what he calls the "shudder factor ", and , by limiting himself to 101 movies, he has had to make many hard choices and leave out some very fine examples. A couple of choices may raise some eyebrows, as also will some of his omissions. He used Jonathan Rigby's superb 3 volume critical history of the genre - " American Gothic", " English Gothic", and "Euro Gothic" - As his reference work, while also relying on a misspent youth Of Saturday matinees, Shock Theatre, "Famous Monsters Of Filmland", and "Castle of Frankenstein ".
