The First Ten Horror Novels Schlocko Ever Read (Plus One Short Story Collection)
I believe that until, say, the mid-70's, horror was like a seedy urban neighborhood full of decaying Victorian mansions, abandoned churches and musty antique stores, the kind of place you might visit on Halloween. Then a small but ambitious crew of developers like Stephen King and Peter Straub gentrified the area, renovating the Gothic ruins, converting the churches into art galleries, and pricing the dusty shops out of business to make way for trendy upscale restaurants and bars. Suddenly, Horrortown was modern and fashionable! Every day was Halloween! Of course, the witches, werewolves and vampires who'd been haunting Horrowtown had to move somewhere, so like everyone else, they wound up in the suburbs, where they menace teenagers to this day.
