Two very different yet wildly the same film directors.
Béla Tarr and Andrej Tarkovski.
They both are philosophers and made philosophical films about the human condition. Always personal, always deeply introspective. Both love to use long single take scenes. Both love to use the same theme's. Both love to take their time and both love to immerse the viewer in their poetic world. Thoughts and feelings are as important as the human spirit to them.
Yet, they both go at it in a different way.
After being called a despiritualised Tarkovski, Tarr replied: "The main difference is Tarkovsky's religious and we are not. But he always had hope; he believed in God. He's much more innocent than us—than me. No, we have seen too many things to make his kind of film. I think his style is also different because several times I have had a feeling he is much softer, much nicer."
Bergman about Tarkovski:"the one who invented a new language, true to the nature of film, as it captures life as a reflection"
