The English Teacher's Top Ten: The Films of Dana Andrews

Our maverick English Teacher and movie buff goes the "Top Ten " route with movie makers, movie stars, and movie genres. Up next - Dana Andrews. Called by one critic the "great minimalist actor", Andrews' underplaying style made him the perfect noir actor. Lacking Bogart's swagger and Mitchum's nihilism, Andrews excelled at the ordinary man facing extraordinary circumstances, not only in his noir work but also in films as different as "The Best Years Of Our Lives" and " Night Of the Demon". In some ways, his acting was as underrated as it was underplayed. Alcohol derailed his career in the 1950s, but he returned as a character actor and a spokesman for alcoholism treatment and recovery programs in the 1960s. There was nothing ordinary about him then.
