'The Dinner Party' by Judy Chicago - Page 18

"The Dinner Party is an installation artwork by feminist artist Judy Chicago. Widely regarded as the first epic feminist artwork, it functions as a symbolic history of women in Western civilisation. There are 39 elaborate place settings arranged along a triangular table for 39 mythical and historically famous women". The first wing comprises women from Prehistory to the Roman Empire, the second from the Beginnings of Christianity to the Reformation, and the third from the American to the Women's Revolution. The rest are names featured on the 'Heritage Floor' inscribed on white porcelain floor tilings.
Whatever your opinion of the work as a piece of art, all these women are well worth looking into; I personally found it fascinating (if time-consuming) to read about each and every one. Credit also to Rebel Women Embroidery whose work provided me with images I would otherwise lack.
