The scariest horror movies span decades and themes, but they all have one thing in common: the ability to tap into your deepest fears. Horror films are so unsettling to watch because they play out the very things you'd most like to avoid in real life. Vampires? Wouldn't want to meet one! A haunted house? No thanks. A twisted serial killer who just won't quit? Yeah, that's a hard pass from me.
And yet! I love a scary movie. There's something cathartic about facing these terrors from the safety of your couch. I've shared a few of my favorites, below, and asked my fellow Glamour staffers about the scariest horror movies they've ever watched as well. The results were entertaining, to say the least. They also gave me some new scary movies to add to my queue—and hopefully yours too. So turn the lights off, grab your popcorn, and get ready to be spooked with these Halloween movies.
