When a movie is a big hit, it is only natural for Hollywood producers to want to continue the story (and make more money) by making a sequel. However, many movies really don't need sequels, but get them anyway. The predecessors of these films work perfectly fine by themselves, which is usually why their second halves are of lesser quality and have no real reason to exist.
