Absurdist or surreal comedy is a sub-style of Comedy that focuses on bizarre, unnatural, non-sequential, nonsensical, illogical, and/or - as the name suggests - absurdist behaviour and themes.
Dada shared a role in moving forward the absurdist scene with its random and illogical short films of the 1920s, and art structures and ideals of the 1910s. The Surrealist Movement of the 1920s saw a further exploration into narrative structure, providing multiple examinations of irrationality and thought function. Both genres were often considered playful, and helped insert comedic elements into abstract or leftfield imagery and/or narrative structures (or lack thereof).
Modern examples of absurdist humour tends to focus on esoteric, sometimes inside jokes and themes. Running gags of bizarre Satire and avant-garde themes and imagery are common. Stoner Film narratives can often include absurdist comedy due to the inclusion of psychedelics and "trippy" imagery that follows their usage.
