Close on its heels was the insomniac, taxi driver Travis Bickle, whose descent into madness was brilliantly portrayed by Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver. Then there was Samuel Jackson as the sermon-spewing hit man Jules Winnfield in Tarantino's cult movie 'Pulp Fiction'.
