Surrealism is hard to describe, let alone quantify. Essentially, it's an attempt through art to depict—but not define or pin down, the workings of the unconscious mind. By juxtaposing various elements and blurring the line between dream, reality, fantasy, and symbol, the artist can produce an effect in the audience that is in equal parts familiar, uncanny, disgusting, appealing, entrancing, and haunting.
