South Dakota's Special Birds - Page 2

Like all of the Great Plains states, South Dakota has a pleasant mix of eastern and western birds. Sica Hollow State Park in the northeast and Newton Hills State Park in the southeast are good places to look for birds typical of eastern woodlands like Broad-winged Hawk, Yellow-throated Vireo, and Scarlet Tanager. Prairie pothole wetlands at Sand Creek and Lacreek National Wildlife Refuges are home to numerous nesting waterbirds as well as grassland specialties like grouse and Upland Sandpipers. And, of course, the Black Hills, home to Mount Rushmore, South Dakota's most famous attraction, provide highland conifer forest habitat for birds of the Rocky Mountains such as Pinyon Jay and American Dipper, and even an isolated population of Virginia's Warbler.
