87 long ( 500 + pages ) books of non-fiction in a variety of subject areas that are absorbing, fascinating, and so well written that the reader can happily get lost in them. History predominates, but an attempt has been made to include philosophy, economics, religion, arts, and hard and social science. Originally, only single-volume works were going to be included, but when that meant Churchill, Catton, and Foote had to be excluded, our compiler relented.
