Ranker's 15 Major Movies That Made It Impossible to Make a (Direct) Sequel

"There is no limit to the narrative acrobatics that studios are willing to pull to eke a little more money out of a successful story, but some movies essentially made it impossible to make a direct sequel. That doesn't mean they can't have spinoffs, prequels, or remakes, because there is always room to create a backstory, bring peripheral characters into the spotlight, or rework a familiar tale to fit modern sensibilities. Most major movies intentionally keep things open-ended to allow for a sequel. Every once in a while, however, a movie comes along that leaves no such prospect. This could be because the protagonist dies or the world ends, or the structure of the story is resolved in a way that prevents it from being reopened without turning into something else entirely. Whatever the reason, these movies and their creators deserve appreciation for the guts it takes to defy the industry's obsession with franchises." - ranker.com
