Penanggala, Manananggal, Leyaks, Krasue, Aswangs - Flying Head Vampires of East Asia
You may know the comedic gyongsi vampires that originated in the Hong Kong comedy, Mr. Vampire, but do you know about traditional suckers from southeast Asia? These films come mainly from Thailand and the Philippines, but also Indonesia, Hong Kong, China, and Cambodia. Most of these creatures separate their bodies and are vampiric in nature. Thai Krasue tend to be less dangerous and feed on garbage, leading to a number of romantic stories. There have also been at least two krasue TV series (กระสือ/Krasue (1994) and กระสือมหานคร/Krasue Mahanakorn (2015) and an adult film, กระสือ พันธุ์เสียว/Krasue: An Erotic Thai Ghost Story (John Waen, before 2008)--the pictures I found were adult in nature but didn't show the monstrous qualities. Few of these films are available to Western audiences, and most(?) have not been subtitled. I believe this is a complete list, but I'm told a sequel to Ghost with Hole has a krasue in it, too. This list is mostly pins for me.
