Novels or Short Story Collections? Fiction That Defies Easy Categorization

There are novels which feature recurring characters or a single setting, but feature multiple narratives or narrators. Sometimes it's because the writer is a novice making the transition from short fiction to a longer narrative form, sometimes it's because the writer is a postmodernist who gets bored exploring a single character for the length of an entire novel. Whatever the case, it can make for a very lively and engaging read, not to mention a nice contrast with 1,000-page explorations of infidelity among the Russian aristocracy.
