New Birds John Saw in 2012

In 2012, I found my first rare bird (as opposed to merely chasing someone else's find) with my lifer Lark Bunting - a first winter record in Humboldt County; saw my second Code 4 bird (the overwintering Falcated Duck at Colusa NWR); visited Washington and Idaho for the first time in March on another HSU class trip, seeing a Greater Sage-Grouse lek in Oregon on the way back; and finally had some luck chasing and finding the annual rare (eastern) warblers that show up in California every fall. While on winter break at the end of the year, I also saw a first state record for California, the juvenile Gray Hawk in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara County. So while the amount of lifers I saw in 2012 may not have substantial, the quality was quite good.
