British academic M.R. James (1862 – 1936) wrote chilling ghost stories that placed malevolent supernatural entities into realistic settings. This became the blue print for the modern horror story. James's ideas and his ability to evoke a sense of believable dread still has a profound influence on modern writers and filmmakers.
This is a list of direct adaptations of James's work including animations, feature films, TV adaptions and low budget amateur shorts.
