Dead Man Don't Wear Plaid is a 1982 film, co-written by screenwriter George Gipe, director Carl Reiner, and star Steve Martin. The movie is simultaneously a parody of, and an homage to, the classic black-and-white films noirs of the 1940's. Scenes from 19 different films were incorporated into the movie, interspersed with new footage (shot in black-and-white) as a means of "introducing characters" and moving the story forward. (Although no characters from Keeper of the Flame were used, just a car crash scene.)
The film is also notable for being the final film of both 8-time Academy Award-winning costume designer Edith Head and of 3-time Academy Award-winner Miklós Rósza.
Even if you're not the biggest fan of noir, black-and-white, or 1940's cinema, the film is hilarious and definitely worth your while.
