There are two French regions in Southwestern France: Nouvelle-Aquitane and Occitanie.
Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the largest administrative region in France, spanning the west and southwest of the mainland. The region was created by the territorial reform of French Regions in 2014 through the merger of three regions: Aquitaine, Limousin and Poitou-Charentes. After Île-de-France, New Aquitaine is the premier French region in research and innovation and the French region with the most tourism jobs.
Occitanie is the southernmost administrative region of metropolitan France, created on 1 January 2016 from the former regions of Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées. The modern administrative region is named after the larger cultural and historical region of Occitania, which corresponds with the southern third of France.
