These were the most populous U.S. cities in 1990, the year of the 21st U.S. Census. In this decade, New York regained population after its heavy loss in the 1970s, Los Angeles replaced Chicago as the nation's second largest city, Houston surpassed Philadelphia as the fourth largest, San Diego and Dallas became the second cities in California and Texas to reach 1 million people, and San Antonio made its first appearance in the top 10.
