This is a list of the most populous U.S. cities in 1840, the year of the sixth U.S. Census. Brooklyn was separate from New York City until the five boroughs consolidated in 1898, and so is listed separately here. The actual #8, Northern Liberties Township, merged with Philadelphia in 1854, as did #11-12 (Spring Garden and Southwark districts), and so #13, Washington, D.C. is included here in the top 10.
