Cher (/ʃɛər/; born Cherilyn Sarkisian; 5/20/46) is a singer, actress and pop icon. Often referred to as the "Goddess of Pop" she is seen as embodying female autonomy. Cher is known for her distinctive contralto voice and for adopting a variety of styles and appearances throughout her >60 year career. Cher gained fame in 1965 as half of the folk rock husband-wife duo Sonny & Cher after their song "I Got You Babe" hit #1 in the US & UK. By 1967, they had sold 40 million records. Her solo career boomed at the same time, with the top-ten hits "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" & "You Better Sit Down Kids". She became a TV star in the '70s with first The Sonny & Cher Show, watched by >30 million viewers weekly and then the Cher Show. She emerged as a fashion icon with her elaborate outfits.
