The Cars were a US rock band formed in Boston in 1976. Emerging from the new wave scene in the late '70s, it consisted of Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, Ric Ocasek, Benjamin Orr & David Robinson. Ocasek & Orr shared lead vocals, and Ocasek was the band's main songwriter. The Cars were at the forefront of the merger of '70s guitar-oriented rock with the new synthesizer-oriented new wave of the early '80s. A critic for The NY Times described the Cars' style: "mixing disparate trends—punk minimalism, labyrinthine synthesizer / guitar textures of art rock, '50s rockabilly & terse power pop." They had 4 Top 10s: Shake It Up (1981), You Might Think (1984), Drive (1984) & Tonight She Comes (1985) and won Best New Artist in the 1978 Rolling Stone Readers' Poll, and won Video of the Year for "You Might Think" at the 1st MTV VMAs in 1984.
