Beastie Boys were a US hip hop group from NYCity, formed in 1981. The group was Michael "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "MCA" Yauch, & Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz. They grew out of an experimental punk band The Young Aborigines in 1978. After local success with the 1983 comedy hip hop single "Cooky Puss," they made a full switch to hip hop, touring with Madonna in 1985 and a year later releasing their debut album, Licensed to Ill (1986), the first rap record to top Billboard. Their 2nd, Paul's Boutique (1989), composed almost entirely of samples, received critical acclaim. Others: Check Your Head (1992), Ill Communication (1994), Hello Nasty (1998), To the 5 Boroughs (2004), The Mix-Up (2007) & Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 (2011). They've sold 20 million records & had 7 platinum albums from 1986-2004. They're the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began tracking.
