John's Very Good Movies

These are a subset of my cinema films ranging from very good to masterpieces. Of all the movies made, only a few are masterpieces. From very good upward there are many worth seeing. These include significant contributions to film making, genre definition or redefinition, to simply superb entertainment. This list spans an enormous range of genres and sub-genres; not everyone will like them all. Two in particular have content considered offensive, but are considered "must see" because of their importance (both are on Roger Ebert's Great Movies list). MPAA ratings span G to NC-17. Do not blindly watch any you don't know anything about. Research director, genre, MPAA rating, and subject material. Then decide if it's worth your time. The initial list is in chronological order of official release. Watch the years; some have remakes! Some very popular franchises are absent (e.g. Harry Potter, Hunger Games, etc.). This is deliberate as they're so well known.
