This is part of a series of lists I am publishing to provide a concise and engaging overview of different cultures/countries. I want to make clear that the purpose of this list is NOT to list the definitive 50 best places or experiences in Italy. Rather, it is to provide what I consider a good overview, summary or cross-section of the country. For these lists, I have a framework that I am working within which is as follows:
1) the locations and attractions should represent both historical sites and modern developments;
2) as many diverse aspects, locations and attractions of a culture/country should be included as possible; and
3) where possible, a few 'off the beaten track' locations and/or attractions should be included.
I hope people enjoy these places and experiences as much as I did. And just a note - for logical travelling reasons, I've included the Vatican City in this list, even though it's legally not part of Italy.
