Of the forty-one English monarchs since 1066, four never married; five married more than once; one married six times; and seven are reputed to have been gay. But despite this, forty-two people have managed to get their hands on the title of Queen or Consort: whether they wanted it or not.
Mary de Bohun (first wife of Henry IV) and Anne Hyde (first wife of James I) don't quite make the cut, having died before their husbands took the throne. Sophia Dorothea, is also absent, having been divorced from the future George I before he inherited the English throne: however, King John's discarded first wife Isabella of Gloucester just sneaks in as their marriage was annulled right at the beginning of his reign. William III and Mary II are both missing, for although technically the consort of the other, they were co-rulers in their own rights of force and birth. And the infamous Wallis Simpson is also absent, having married Edward VIII after he chose to marry her rather than ascend the throne.
