Great Novels From Different Countries of the World

A friend of mine put together a list of books from major countries of the world. He wanted relatively new works with contemporary voices representing countries. Hence, no War and Peace for Russia (rather, Day of the Oprichnik) or Madame Bovary for France (rather, Atomised). It's a fascinating list I hope to read through eventually.
