Rereading Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics" made me think about all of the graphic novels, comics, and manga that I've read and how impressive graphic novels are.
I grew up with my dad's old Dutch/Belgium comic books. Even though I couldn't read Dutch at the time, I loved making up the stories based on what I saw (which is justified by "Understanding Comics"). Although I was sad to find out that most of the European comics are not as popular here in the US, it was nice to find a few exceptions (Tintin, Asterix the Gaul, etc)
Here are a few of my favorite comics and graphic novels that I recommend. I know that there is a bias towards fiction works leaning in fantasy (I'm not a complete fan of nonfiction, sorry). All of the works here are included because of the artwork and the story telling/plot (The Belgium ones included).
If you have any recommendations on comics, graphic novels, or manga, please leave a comment :D
