Films Without a Resolution

This could beg the question, what distinguishes an ambiguous resolution from something that is just irresolute? The Birds never explains why or what caused the phenomenon at the center of the movie and is a "where will their journey take them" kind of conclusion, though I personally would consider it a proper conclusion in its execution. I guess I'm thinking of movies that end either abruptly or without its central loose ends accounted for, ending in a way that isn't expected. Like with The Birds, how or why a bunch of birds are attacking may be reeling in the viewer's mind but it isn't necessary to know for it to function as it is, which is simply that a bunch of birds are attacking and everyone must work to survive this most unusual of apocalyptic events. A movie like The Last Wave on the other hand, where its central conflicts and the events that drive the film are ultimately left hanging, fits better to me.
