Films Umbrellas Saw in April 2019 - Page 2

These are the films I saw in April, ranked in order of how much I liked them (most liked first). Although Linklater's 'Before Midnight' has the number one spot, and I also appreciated Kieslowski's 'Colors' trilogy (except 'White', which seems to me markedly inferior to the other two), in many ways the standout film of the month for me was the 1929 silent Piccadilly, from which the still is taken. Anna May Wong is sensational, and after that I sought out some of her other films (The Toll of the Sea, Java Head, The Thief of Bagdad). Sadly her talent was largely wasted, not helped by the Hays Code's ban on 'miscegenation'. But at least there'll always be Piccadilly.
