Films of 1961 That Michal Jerzy Recommends – Ranked

Although many important films had their premiere in 1961 and it would be considered a very good year for cinema in any other decade I have an impression that compared to the previous year it looks somewhat less fruitful. But I may be wrong – after all the old masters (Antonioni, Bergman, Buñuel, Kazan, Kurosawa and Ozu) did not disappoint and a few works of the emerging talents were remarkable as well – Pasolini, Olmi, Petri and Demy had their successful debuts, Kobayashi finished his epic trilogy and Imamura made a significant progress. And of course we got another masterpiece from Resnais. Anyway this ranking reflects my appreciation of Italian cinema, which definitely was at its peak in the 60s, but other major countries are represented as well. Still I suppose that in order to prepare a more comprehensive list I should have watched at least a few films from Russia.
