1960 may be considered a breaking year in the history of cinema, a year when some of the most important titles for modern cinema had their premiere (Breathless, L'Avventura, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning). It was also a year when the most acclaimed directors at that time showed the works that may be ranked among their essential (Fellini, Hitchcock, Ozu, Wilder, Visconti) or maybe less major yet still successful (Bergman, Kurosawa). But in the shadow of these unequivocally praised masterpieces there are many films that require more attention – you may find some of them in this list.
I have watched (or rewatched) all these films during the last three years – so I remember all of them quite well. However I usually tend to overrate films that strike me as innovative or emotionally gripping after the first screening. On the other hand there are some titles like Late Autumn or Rocco that I will probably appreciate more after rewatching them. But this is how I rank these films now.
