This Academy Award is presented to songwriters who compose the best original song written specifically for a film. Artists who performed the song for the movie are asked to perform at the Awards ceremony, but won't actually receive the Oscar unless they contributed to the song's composition. Many people are surprised that musicals don't get nominated in this category. That's because no existing songs from previously produced stage musicals are eligible.
