Don't Talk About Socialism. . .

My Facebook feed is full of "memes" about socialism; from conservatives and Trumpzis who use the word (like liberals use "fascism") to mean "anything I don't like", to Berniecrats and "Democratic Socialists" who think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. None seem to have the slightest idea what the word means.
I made this list for a friend who is taking an entry-level college course in literary theory and was expected to already know about Marxism, although as far as I know it's not taught in any American high school. I'm posting here because I think it would be interesting to see what people who post "memes" have actually read.
This isn't an exhaustive list; it's more the "theoretical minimum." I've limited it to things I've read myself, so there are big gaps. Some background, the "canon" of Marx and Engel's own writings, the Russian Revolution and what went wrong, and some later authors students are expected to know about.
I welcome comments on my choice of selections.
