"The David di Donatello Award for Best Film is a film award presented annually by the Accademia del Cinema Italiano to recognize the most outstanding Italian film theatrically released in Italy during the year preceding the ceremony. The award was first given in 1970, and became competitive in 1981".
In the 1970s, two or even three films received awards at once. Since 1981, only one film has received the award, with the exception of the 1984 and 1991 ceremonies (2 films).
