Although the term "cult classic" was taken from the world of film, bibliophiles have repurposed it to described books from the fringe that are transgressive, experimental, and countercultural (at least when they're first published, that is).
These are books that often fall on "best cult books" lists, but are also popular and still beloved by the mainstream (at least nowadays, that is).
