An exclusive list compiled during Cosmic Horror in Film Week. This list is comprised of films that members of The Holy Mountain posted during the week.
Cosmic horror is less a subgenre than a thematic shift for horror. While traditional horror may trigger our fear of infection, or maiming or violation, cosmic horror preys on our feeling of insignificance, of unknowing, of incomprehensibility. In short, while traditional horror gets us through terror, cosmic horror gets us through our sense of awe. Cosmic horror isn't about the fear that a killer lurks in our backseat, or that the world contains illnesses that could violate our bodies beyond recognition. Cosmic horror is instead our unease that the world isn't quite made for us, and that reality might be too terrible for us to both understand and survive.
