Comics of the 1940s - Page 4

The 1940s is often referred to as the "Golden Age" of comics, and this is true... for the most part. In the USA, comic books were selling better than ever, particularly superhero comics. However, for the first half of the decade, comics in Europe and abroad were nearly extinguished as a medium due to WW2 and a mixture of rationing paper and heavy censorship by occupying Nazi forces. Still, many European publishers bounced back after the war, and many of it's most famous creators got their start in this decade.
Superheroes were the big ticket item in the USA, with every publisher pumping out more and more everyday during the war years; and none were as popular as Captain Marvel (Shazam) and his associated family, who were also the first superheroes to make the jump to cinema with an adventure film in the same decade! But the good times couldn't last, and superheroes became a dying fad by decades end.
But standing in the wing to take their place was a new market: teenagers...
