Classics Illustrated: The Comics Meet Literature and Everybody Wins - Page 5

From the early 1940s to the late 1960s, the Gilberton Company produced this unique line of full comic book adaptations of great literary classics. Unlike other comic book publishers, Gilberton also maintained a backlist Of issues, so that one could order a specific number from the company; moreover, they would periodically reissue their more popular titles. Many a book report assignment was saved from certain disaster by these wonderful things, and, even if they weren't all "classics", they inspired a whole generation of kids, including this English teacher, to go check out at least some of the originals. NOTE: This is the original run of CI by the Gilberton company, in the order in which they were issued. After Gilberton sold the name and ceased publishing, other companies released other titles, but these are generally not considered to be true Classics Illustrated.
