This is part of a series of lists I'm publishing to provide a concise and engaging overview of the movies of different cultures/countries. I want to make clear that the purpose of this list is NOT to list the 50 best Chinese, Hong Kongese or Taiwanese movies. Rather, it is to provide what I consider a good overview or cross-section of a culture's movies. For these lists, I have a framework that I use which I usually list but I need to address something else regarding this list here, so that framework can be found on any of my other lists.
I want to make it absolutely clear that the inclusion of Taiwanese movies in this list does NOT reflect an opinion regarding the political sovereignty of that state or China's claims regarding sovereignty over it. Rather, I believe if you watched all of these movies, you would see the differences between them and be able to see freedom of speech being exercised. Hong-Kongese movies also had their own style, so I wanted to show that too. Enjoy.
