Cedric Gibbons' Oscar Nominations for Art Direction

Cedric Gibbons (1893-1960) designed the Academy Award statuette, then went onto win 11 of them for art direction and/or set decoration, often sharing them with the designers he supervised as head of MGM's art department. Note: although he was nominated 38 times, he could not have won 38 Oscars because there were several years when he was competing against himself. There don't seem to be many biographies of Mr. Gibbons, so he either maintained his privacy or didn't lead a dramatic life . . . no small feat for a man who lived in Hollywood for 45 years.
Winners: "The Bridge of San Luis Rey" (pictured), "The Merry Widow," "Pride and Prejudice," "Blossoms in the Dust," "Gaslight," "The Yearling," "Little Women," "An American in Paris," "The Bad and the Beautiful." "Julius Caesar," "Somebody Up There Likes Me."
