Gerry Anderson's classic puppet show Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons first aired from 1967-68. A more violent, gritty, realistically proportioned puppet epic than preceding show Thunderbirds (1965), the show featured a near indestructible protagonist, Captain Scarlet, doing battle with an invisible enemy, The Mysterons from Mars. Each week he would seek, sometimes in vain, to stop the Mysterons from eliminating their chosen target, and was aided by a team of colour-coded special agents who operated from a base in the sky, Cloudbase, and formed a secret organisation known as Spectrum. Led by the stoically fearless Colonel White, Spectrum could also deploy a team of brave female fighter pilots known as the Angels to help protect Earth from an endless War of Nerves being waged by the unseen enemy.
