All Characters of the Disney Dark Age

The Disney Dark Age started with the last Walt Disney-approved film in 1970, The AristoCats, before Disney's death, and ended in 1988 with Oliver and Company. Because Disney was no longer around, and because of a low-cost, high-reward business model, the films were only modestly successful and are now mostly underrated. The Black Cauldron was one of the biggest failures by Walt Disney Animation and is hated by many but loved by a few, and The Great Mouse Detective actually did turn quite a profit and nearly pulled them out of the Dark Age. Once they learned their lesson, they ended up eliminating their competitor, Sullivan Bluth Studios, and finally succeeded with The Little Mermaid in 1989!
