Forget religion, literature has always been the opiate of the masses. There are libraries full of books, many of them masterpieces, which instruct the reader that wealth and success are the worst fates to befall a human being. Rarely in any of these books do the poor, prosperous protagonist give away all of his earthly possessions and find joy in the simple life, but then we couldn't enjoy the schadenfreude, now, could we?
