Romantic comedies, or rom-coms are films that combine plots of Romance with elements of Comedy. As the name suggests, these films are usually light-hearted and comedic, such as When Harry Met Sally… (1989). However, some can also center around Drama, with plots revolving around break-ups, marriage woes, reconciled love, etc. - such as Annie Hall (1977) and The Apartment (1960).
A common narrative structure tends to revolve around two characters whose love is used as a means of surmounting a difficulty in their relationship. The ideal that love can conquer any boundary is not uncommon in romantic comedy films. Early romantic comedies would sometimes feature elements of Screwball Comedy, as exemplified by My Man Godfrey (1936) and The Lady Eve (1941).
