50 Northern California New Wave/Punk/Hardcore Bands
Although there were thousands of bands that fit this category, the bands listed here are now considered classic or were pivotal in the N. Calif. punk scene circa late 70's to mid 80's. Although some of these bands came from other states (and at least one of these bands lived over the border in Reno) it was Northern California that they called home.
They played such venues in SF as The Mabuhay Gardens, Tool and Die, Club Foot, Folsom Studios, Elite Club, Temple Beautiful, Deaf Club, On Broadway, Sound of Music as well as halls and clubs in Berkeley, Oakland, San Jose, Palo Alto, Santa Rosa, Eureka, Sacramento etc...
