50 Best Horror Films That Will Make You Afraid - Page 2

Horror is a broad genre of cinema aimed at eliciting fear and terror from the audience. Horror films employ diverse themes and go about different ways to achieve these purposes, with, for example, Supernatural Horror narratives focusing on otherworldly, magical creatures, contrasting with Natural Horror narratives where threats arise from the natural world. Other distinctions are made between Psychological Horror, which generally depicts the deteriorating psychological and mental states or insanity of characters to unsettle and cause dread in the audience, and Body Horror's focus on graphic, appalling changes made to the body. Horror films are commonly gruesome and graphic, and sub-genres such as Sadistic Horror and Cannibal are notable for relying on extreme violence and shock value to achieve their effects. While horror may (and often does) incorporate other forms of cinema, a couple of genres most prominently crossover with horror, more so than others.
