A list of fifteen animated movies that were successful and acclaimed enough in their release years to have warranted nominations for the Academy Award for Best Picture but were inexplicably left out, even if some made it into writing, music, or sound categories, or were major technical achievements like Snow White and Toy Story. This is by no means an exhaustive list of animated movies that should have been nominated for Best Picture, but these are the biggest headscratchers in terms of snubs.
One of the listed films (WALL-E) was actually partially responsible for the Academy's decision to expand the Best Picture category from 5 to the current 10 nominees, following the outcry regarding The Dark Knight and WALL-E being left snubbed in 2008. So far, only three animated films have been nominated for the top prize: Beauty and the Beast (1991), Up (2009), and Toy Story 3 (2010).
