11 of the Worst, Huey Lewis & the News

Huey Lewis, b. Hugh Anthony Cregg III, and his generic back-up, the News, spent the first half of the 80's diminishing San Francisco's rock and roll credibility until Starship's "We Built This City" killed it once and for all in 1985. Their string of bland, third-rate frat-rock hits lasted until 1988, when Huey lookalike Dan Quayle was nominated for the Vice Presidency. Coincidence? I wonder. (Please note: many News-men backed up a pre-Attractions Elvis Costello on "My Aim is True," but apparently learned nothing about songwriting. Huey's "The Power of Love" hasn't retained any of the nostalgia value one would expect from serving as the theme to the much-loved 1985 film "Back to the Future," either. Plastic doesn't absorb anything.)
